The 1785-L40C PLC-5/40C is an Allen-Bradley controller with ControlNet networking capabilities, 48 KB word SRAM processor, and ControlNet functionality, installed in the I/O slot of the 1771 I/O chassis. Used to control the output and input of field equipment. The processor has a maximum user memory word of 48KB, a maximum I/O capacity of 2048 (2048 inputs and 2048 outputs complement each other), a maximum program scan time of 0.5 ms per K-word measured in in-place logic, and a scan time of 2 ms per k-word (typical values). The controller consumes 3.3A backplane current at 5V DC and has a maximum heat dissipation of 59 BTU/ hour during operation. The controller supports 1785-CHBM ControlNet hot backup tapes for system hot backup and supports 1771, 1794, 1746 and 1791 8, 16 and 32 point modules as well as intelligent I/O modules. The controller features a basic configuration RJ45 connector ControlNet network access port with an I/O transfer rate of 5 Megabits per second, user-selectable network update times of 2-100ms, and a coprocessor port.

The controller also comes with an 8-pin mini-DIN connector for programming and a 3-pin default DH+ port, and it also has a 25-pin D-shell serial port with optional transfer rates ranging from 57.6K bit/s to 230.4K bit/s.
